Cabling and Bracing Systems

Cabling is the installation of hardware in a tree to help support weak branches or crotches.

Bracing is the installation of metal rods through weak portions of a tree to strengthen it. Bracing is sometimes included in an overall cabling system, mainly to add strength to a weak "V-shaped" crotch.

Cabling & Bracing can reduce the risk of tree failure from:

  • Long heavy limbs
  • Rubbing limbs
  • Storm damage, freezing rain, ice storms, and heavy snow
  • Structural weaknesses, for example a V-shaped crotch

Properly installed cabling systems are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible. But "out of sight" does not mean "out of mind". Tree health and safety are always of paramount importance. Therefore annual inspections by a tree care professional are recommended.

Cabling systems should be professionally examined once a year, typically after the leaves are off the trees. Cabling should also be inspected after each major storm to ensure that there has been no change to the cabling or bracing system.

For these reasons, all Back Tree Service cabling customers receive a free annual inspection.
